I found Montreal people very easy-going, not snobby at all. There are a lot of immigrants, which makes for a nice variety, lots of public art, good transit, good food, etc. The only thing--don't go in August if you want "edgy galleries". They close for the month just like NYC, even though it's one of the times tourists would be most likely to visit. We don't feel the need to follow NYC fashion in this regard in the Twin Cities, so I was a little surprised.

I would definitely go again, and certainly not for the hockey--more for something like this.

Great comments.

Leigh Anne: True. And I'm sure Cleveland is fine--and chose not to make a comment about "not seeing any burning rivers nearby Toronto" (OK, the Blazing Cuyahoga was a long time ago, but Randy Newman fans will always have that image).

Michael: I came very close to using N'awlins as a second example, but unlike Vegas it doesn't have CduS (as far as I know). And it's certainly a city in which it's possible to be unhappy...even if you haven't indulged in a few too many Hurricanes. No argument about the food.

(My original response included the note that I certainly love New Orleans and plan to return--but after that response was caught as spam, thanks to a certain key word, I left part of it out...)

I can say this because I live there (here) now, but it sounds like Montreal is the "New Orleans of Canada" and best of all, without the hockey. Or maybe that is just my reflection on your quote from the article: This is a city where you can do pretty much what you like.

(Ask sometime about the drinking laws in New Orleans. You can carry a drink [adult beverage type] anywhere in the city as long as it is not in glass. There are establishments which are open 24/7 -- one chain combines bar, grill, laundromat. One establishment in my neighborhood opens at 7 pm, and closes when the bartender decides. Sometimes that is 6 am, other times 1 am. And the food is good here, too!)

Sadly, there are always going to be people who feel they must, in writing or in person, put others down to build themselves up, not realizing they come across as arrogant.

Then again, I'm rather fond of Cleveland, so perhaps I'm just taking it too personally. :)

Enjoy Montreal!
